We are writing to invite you to the Newquay Town and Parish Plan Consultation Event to be held on the morning of Saturday 27th February 2010.
The purpose of the event is to involve local people, groups and stakeholders in the latest stage of the community-led plan for Newquay and its surrounding area.
More specifically, we are engaging local groups and people in developing a questionnaire which will ask local people about the issues that affect them and how, from their perspective, they wish to see the area develop in the future. This questionnaire will go to every household and be available online.
With such an important undertaking, we need to ensure that the range of issues that affect local people are included within the questionnaire and that we get the most out of it. The event is part of that process.

Newquay Town and Parish Plan
Public participation will be essential for the success of Newquay Town and Parish Plan
Following a series of successful public meetings held earlier this year, a Steering Committee for Newquay’s Town and Parish Plan has been formed under the Chairmanship of Lady Helen Long. Among its members are representatives from Newquay Town Council, including the Mayor, John Fitter, plus council officers, representatives from residents’ associations, from NCCT, and from educational establishments, as well as local residents willing to commit their time and expertise.
Other towns and areas within Cornwall have either already produced or are working on parish plans, which will be used to feed into the District and County Community strategies to help voice the needs of their communities. This is particularly important now that Cornwall is governed by a Unitary Authority, and it is essential that Newquay provides a strategy of its own. By highlighting important issues it will be in a strong position to influence polices for the future.
The districts which the Newquay plan will cover include the main town area and all built up areas including Pentire, Mayfield, Treloggan, Trencreek, Porth, Whipsiderry and St. Columb Minor, plus Gusti Veor, Gusti Vean, Chapel, Trewollack, Penrose, Trevelgue, Trebelsue, Watergate Bay, and Tregurrian.
Creating a meaningful questionnaire and professionally monitoring the results to produce a plan for an area as large and diverse as Newquay is an enormous task, and the Steering Committee has already spent countless hours on producing a rolling blueprint, along with a risk assessment and budget.
Funding in the form of grants is in place, and the Steering Committee, which is community led, has decided that the next step must be to advertise for a project co-ordinator with the relevant experience to carry the project forward. An advertisement is appearing in the press, and it is hoped to have a co-ordinator in place by September.
Once he or she is appointed, the work of identifying and consulting the various groups within the community will begin in earnest, and help from residents throughout the area will be sought. Co-operation from all is the key to success. Special efforts will be made to contact those who might find difficulty in responding, such as the elderly, schoolchildren, and those with disabilities.
It is expected that at least a year will be needed to bring the whole project to completion because of the amount of work and the particular difficulties involved, but the Newquay Town and Parish Plan is such an important strategic tool within the Unitary Authority, that all effort will be made to complete it as quickly and as professionally as possible.
The residents of Newquay and surrounding areas will shortly be asked for their co-operation in producing this essential document. |
